Thetus Smith Presented 2014 Spark Plug Award

At the Jan. 2015 lunch meeting, Diane Walters, immediate past-president of APC, presented Thetus Smith with the 2014 Spark Plug Award. Thetus has been maintaining APC’s mailing lists and compiling and sending the Email Express for many years. She learned and converted to a new database manager last year. Thetus takes reservations for the APC luncheons, working closely with the restaurant, and helped with the garage sale. She comes faithfully to board meetings, even though she is a retired member and no longer a voting member of the board. Thetus is someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes, but is one of the most important people in making the APC organization and meetings successful.

March 5, 2015–Atwood Journalism Chair

Mark Trahant is an independent journalist. He serves as the 20th Atwood Chair of Journalism at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The position brings nationally known journalists to teach courses and speak to students, journalists and the public in Alaska.

He is also writing a book on austerity, a project he started after winning a Rockefeller Foundation residency to the Bellagio Center on Lake Como, Italy. He blogs about austerity on a regular basis on his web page, trahantreports.com, and on Facebook.

Trahant reports and comments on events and trends via Twitter and other social media. Every day for nearly six years, Trahant has written a 140-character rhyme based on a daily news story (@newsrimes4lines). He’s been a reporter for PBS’ Frontline series. The Frontline piece, “The Silence,” was about sexual abuse by priests in a Alaska native village. He also has been editor-in-residence at the University of Idaho in the spring of 2011 and again in 2012. He taught courses on social media, the American West and editorial writing.

In 2009 and 2010 Trahant was a Kaiser Media Fellow writing about health care reform focused on programs the government already operates, such as the Indian Health Service.

Trahant also recently completed The Last Great Battle of the Indian Wars, the story about the legacy of Sen. Henry M. Jackson. “Scoop” Jackson and Forrest J. Gerard. Trahant is the former editor of the editorial page for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer where he chaired the daily editorial board, directed a staff of writers, editors and a cartoonist.

Trahant is a member of Idaho’s Shoshone-Bannock Tribe and former president of the Native American Journalists Association.

Mouhcine Guettabi presents “Health Disparities and Urban & Regional Economics.”

Mouhcine Guettabi  teaches in the UAA  Economics Dept. and is on faculty with ISER.  At this event  he examines the interconnections between health disparities and economics.  Mouhcine Guettabi received a Ph.D. in Economics from Oklahoma State University. He has been with UAA since 2012.

Heather Brook Adams presents “Secrets, Sex, Shame, and Blame: What Hidden Stories of 1960s Women Can Teach Us.”

Heather Brook Adams explores the recent history of unwed pregnancy in the United States and the rhetoric of shame and rhetorical silences that are part of this gendered history.  Her talk focuses on the stories of the women themselves and the rhetorical implications of this history.

Heather Brook Adams teaches in the UAA English Dept. She earned a Ph.D. in English from Penn State University and holds Master’s degrees from the Bread Loaf School of English (Middlebury College) and the University of Maryland, College Park.

Margritt Engel and Karen Willmore present “G.W. Steller’s Trek Through the Wilds of Siberia.”

After translating the highly acclaimed book, Steller’s History of Kamchatka;  Collected Information Concerning the History of Kamchatka, Its Peoples, Their Manners, Names, Lifestyles, and Various Customary Practices,  Margritt Engel and Karen Willmore are working together again on newly found diaries of naturalist and explorer Georg Wilhelm Steller.

Margritt Engel translated Journal of a Voyage with Bering, 1741-1742, George Wilhelm Steller with O.W. Frost in 1988. She is Professor Emerita in the Department of Languages at UAA.

 Writing about Climate Change

Philosopher and writer Kathleen Dean Moore, singer/song writer Libby Roderick, human rights attorney Robin Bronen, and journalist Yereth Rosen come together to discuss the challenges in writing about climate change and global responsibility. This event is sponsored with 49 Writers, UAA Office of Sustainability, and UAA English Department.

Philippe Amstislavski presents “Climate Change Impacts on Access to Health Care.”

Philippe Amstislavski is Associate Professor of Public Health (Dept. of Health Sciences) at UAA. His research focus is on the interactions between natural and social systems, particularly between climate change and community adaptation and resilience in the Circumpolar North. Philippe Amstislavski received his Ph.D. in  the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, CUNY, a M.E.M. in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, and a Masters in Environmental Design, Sustainable Materials Development from School of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jifeng Peng presents “Renewable Energy Systems: Wind Energy.”

What does research tell us about wind energy? Come and find out at this informative event with Dr. Jifeng Peng.
Jifeng Peng is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UAA. He has a Ph.D. in Bioengineering, California Institute of Technology; an M.S. Mechanical Engineering, Stony Brook University, NY; and a B.S. Mechanical Engineering, University of Science & Technology of China, China.

7. Thursday, February 26 from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
Dr. Lyn Freeman and Dr. Rebecca White present “Pain & Neuroplasticity, Part 2.”

At  this event, Dr. Freeman and Dr. White will explain from the medical and psychological/behavioral perspectives why and how the brain ‘learns’ to experience pain when this no longer serves a survival purpose. A new treatment approach, based on the principles of neuroplasticity, will be explained. Approaches that ‘compete’ with pain signals will be described. Guest speakers are Lyn Freeman, Ph.D., BCLPC, Mind Matters Research, LLC, Alaska Institute of Surgical & Medical Specialties, and Rebecca White, M.D., Arctic Skye Family Medicine.

Classical Pianist Edvinas Minkstimas: Lithuanian Legacies

Edvinas Minkstimas performs “Songs of the Vilnius Ghetto” and compositions by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911), Anatolijus Senderovas (b. 1945, Lithuanian Jewish composer),  and virtuoso selections by Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Schubert, Gershwin.

Edvinas Minkstimas earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School, the Artist Diploma from the Paris Conservatory and degrees from Lithuanian Academy of Music. He recently joined the faculty of the Washington Conservatory of Music. He is an honored Steinway Artist and winner of eight international piano competitions.

Feb. 5, 2015–“Breast cancer messaging: What’s Working? What’s Not?”–Kate Landis and Cheley Grigsby

Kate Landis has been the Program Director for Southcentral Foundation’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program through the CDC (NBCCEDP) for the past 14 years. Prior to that, she worked as Data Manager for Arctic Slope Native Association’s NBCCEDP program for 7 years. She has been the Chair of the NBCCEDP Council representing this program with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and is currently the Chair for the NACDD Cancer Council. In addition, she serves as program director for the CDC Wisewoman and Colorectal grants. Kate also oversees an Avon Foundation grant and an IHS Diabetes grant. Although she manages several grants, her passion is with the Breast and Cervical Early Detection program. She is a five-year breast cancer survivor. She has a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Northwestern University.

Cheley Grigsby is the grant manager and Program Director for the State of Alaska’s Breast and Cervical Health Check program (BCHC), which screens more than 8,000 women annually. BCHC is one of the five federally funded grant awardees in Alaska. Cheley has more than 12 years’ experience working in the field of population-based cancer screening. The mission of these programs is to reach under-screened women in order to diagnose cancers in the early stages.

Gretchen taught at University of Alaska Anchorage and Anchorage Community College for 35 years. She coordinated the creation of the Masters degree in Adult Education at UAA in 1990 and taught a wide variety of graduate courses in the program as well as chairing 100 thesis committees. She has built a retreat center at her family homestead on Yukon Island and hosts noted scholars, courses, and retreats there every summer including those focused on adult education/adult learning, archaeology, ecology, geology, botany and marine biology, wellness, and writing & poetry. She earned her Ph.D. in Adult Education from Florida State University. The 2015 Communications Contest is Open

APC is now accepting entries for the 2015 Alaska Professional Communicators’ Communications Contest electronically through the NFPW website.

Once you are on the contest Welcome (login) page, click the white REGISTER link in the upper left corner of the contest site, you will get an entrant form that prompts entrants to select “member” or “non-member” status and the name of the affiliate (including at-large) whose contest they are entering. Those selections will put you into the correct affiliate contest. All directions needed to enter the contest are contained in the pages of the contest site. But if you have questions or need help entering, click the FAQ or Contact Us tabs on the contest navigation bar.

The entry deadline is Monday, February 9. For work that must be submitted in hard-copy format, the entry deadline is Monday, February 2.  The contest is open to both members and nonmembers of APC.

Dec. 3, 2014–The New KTVA 11–John Tracy

John Tracy became a partner at Bradley Reid + Associates in the summer of 2008 after 23 years as an anchor and News Director at KTUU-TV. John won numerous Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Awards as a reporter and producer at KTUU. A member of the Alaska Broadcasters Hall of Fame, John has covered stories for NBC Nightly News and CNN. At Bradley Reid, he’s produced campaigns for clients such as ConocoPhillips, Alaska Tourism and Providence. In 2012 he was commissioned to spearhead a team to re-build KTVA 11 for GCI, as Alaska’s first high-definition television station. John’s domestic focus group includes his wife Donna, their three children and two grandkids. Continue reading →
