The 2015 Communications Contest is Open

APC is now accepting entries for the 2015 Alaska Professional Communicators’ Communications Contest electronically through the NFPW website.

Once you are on the contest Welcome (login) page, click the white REGISTER link in the upper left corner of the contest site, you will get an entrant form that prompts entrants to select “member” or “non-member” status and the name of the affiliate (including at-large) whose contest they are entering. Those selections will put you into the correct affiliate contest. All directions needed to enter the contest are contained in the pages of the contest site. But if you have questions or need help entering, click the FAQ or Contact Us tabs on the contest navigation bar.

The entry deadline is Monday, February 9. For work that must be submitted in hard-copy format, the entry deadline is Monday, February 2.  The contest is open to both members and nonmembers of APC.

Dec. 3, 2014–The New KTVA 11–John Tracy

John Tracy became a partner at Bradley Reid + Associates in the summer of 2008 after 23 years as an anchor and News Director at KTUU-TV. John won numerous Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Awards as a reporter and producer at KTUU. A member of the Alaska Broadcasters Hall of Fame, John has covered stories for NBC Nightly News and CNN. At Bradley Reid, he’s produced campaigns for clients such as ConocoPhillips, Alaska Tourism and Providence. In 2012 he was commissioned to spearhead a team to re-build KTVA 11 for GCI, as Alaska’s first high-definition television station. John’s domestic focus group includes his wife Donna, their three children and two grandkids. Continue reading

Popular Chinese Novels and Dramas: A Series

Everyone is invited to come and learn about the Chinese television series sensation “Empresses in the Palace / Legend of Concubine” by Zhen Huan, to read  the highly acclaimed book, Fortress Besieged by Qian Zhongshu, and Red Sorghum by Mo Yan– recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. Dr. Annie Zeng, members of the Confucius Institute, and UAA Faculty will participate. This event is sponsored with the UAA Confucius Institute.

Former Teachers as Writers

Former teachers Lynn Lovegreen, Deb Vanasse, Tam Agosti-Gisler and Julie Stafford discuss their books and the role teaching has in their writing. Julie Stafford is author of The Manual That Should Have Come With Your Child But Didn’t: A Teacher’s Guide to Healthy Parenting; Lynn Lovegreen is author of numerous young adult romance novels, including Quicksilver to Gold, and author Deb Vanasee who has published more than a dozen books in a variety of genres, including Lucy’s Dance and Cold Spell.Joining the authors will be Tam Agosti-Gisler, who will discuss Dona Marie Wolking Agosti’s book Wilma, which is about a wolverine.

Poet Carolyn Goodwin: Trapline

Caroline Goodwin was born and raised in Anchorage. She moved to California from Sitka in 1999 to attend Stanford University as a Wallace Stegner fellow in poetry. Her first collection of poetry called Trapline, was published by JackLeg Press in 2013. Currently, she serves as the first Poet Laureate of San Mateo County, CA, and also teaches in the MFA Writing program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her first poem was published in the Anchorage Daily News in 1971.
