Examples of eligible occupations: editorial, photographic, production, managerial, graphic, or creative communications services for a newspaper, journal, or magazine; on the publications or editing staff or in the public relations department of an established educational, governmental, industrial, commercial, civic, or fraternal organization or institution; on the staff of a licensed radio or television station; employee or owner of a recognized public relations firm; or an accredited teacher of communications. Freelance communicators are welcome; however, as evidence that you genuinely work in the communications field for remuneration, we require submission of at least one sample of work sold during the past year. Examples of such items include a book, article, or short story; a newsletter; a news story; public relations or publicity services; copy for advertising, etc. You should expect to maintain a regular production level. If you are on the regular payroll of a firm or publication, please furnish a statement to that effect.
Retired Membership ($45)
Any member in good standing at least five years who retires from full-time professional employment and does not receive substantial remuneration from media communications may elect to become a retired member. Such members may attend meetings and speak to motions, but may not propose, second, or vote on a motion, nor hold office. They are not counted for quorums, but are counted in membership totals for delegate allocation. They cannot be a delegate to the NFPW National Conference as long as they remain in retired status. Retired members are eligible for the NFPW Communications Contest. They are listed in the NFPW directory and receive NFPW national publications.
Student Membership ($35)
Any full-time college or university student who intends to enter the communications field upon graduation is eligible for student membership. Student members may attend meetings and speak to motions, but may not propose, second, or vote on a motion, nor hold office. They are eligible for the NFPW Communications Contest. They are listed in the NFPW directory and receive NFPW national publications. Student members are eligible for student membership for 12 months following college graduation. After that time, they must meet the qualifications for active membership.
Honorary Membership
This membership may be granted by APC to recognize outstanding achievement in the field of communications upon recommendation of the Board of Directors. Honorary members retain their honorary status indefinitely. Dues payment will be waived for either the state or the national organization or both, as determined by the board.
