Classical Pianist Edvinas Minkstimas: Lithuanian Legacies

Edvinas Minkstimas performs “Songs of the Vilnius Ghetto” and compositions by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911), Anatolijus Senderovas (b. 1945, Lithuanian Jewish composer),  and virtuoso selections by Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Schubert, Gershwin.

Edvinas Minkstimas earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School, the Artist Diploma from the Paris Conservatory and degrees from Lithuanian Academy of Music. He recently joined the faculty of the Washington Conservatory of Music. He is an honored Steinway Artist and winner of eight international piano competitions.

Feb. 5, 2015–“Breast cancer messaging: What’s Working? What’s Not?”–Kate Landis and Cheley Grigsby

Kate Landis has been the Program Director for Southcentral Foundation’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program through the CDC (NBCCEDP) for the past 14 years. Prior to that, she worked as Data Manager for Arctic Slope Native Association’s NBCCEDP program for 7 years. She has been the Chair of the NBCCEDP Council representing this program with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and is currently the Chair for the NACDD Cancer Council. In addition, she serves as program director for the CDC Wisewoman and Colorectal grants. Kate also oversees an Avon Foundation grant and an IHS Diabetes grant. Although she manages several grants, her passion is with the Breast and Cervical Early Detection program. She is a five-year breast cancer survivor. She has a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Northwestern University.

Cheley Grigsby is the grant manager and Program Director for the State of Alaska’s Breast and Cervical Health Check program (BCHC), which screens more than 8,000 women annually. BCHC is one of the five federally funded grant awardees in Alaska. Cheley has more than 12 years’ experience working in the field of population-based cancer screening. The mission of these programs is to reach under-screened women in order to diagnose cancers in the early stages.

Gretchen taught at University of Alaska Anchorage and Anchorage Community College for 35 years. She coordinated the creation of the Masters degree in Adult Education at UAA in 1990 and taught a wide variety of graduate courses in the program as well as chairing 100 thesis committees. She has built a retreat center at her family homestead on Yukon Island and hosts noted scholars, courses, and retreats there every summer including those focused on adult education/adult learning, archaeology, ecology, geology, botany and marine biology, wellness, and writing & poetry. She earned her Ph.D. in Adult Education from Florida State University. The 2015 Communications Contest is Open

APC is now accepting entries for the 2015 Alaska Professional Communicators’ Communications Contest electronically through the NFPW website.

Once you are on the contest Welcome (login) page, click the white REGISTER link in the upper left corner of the contest site, you will get an entrant form that prompts entrants to select “member” or “non-member” status and the name of the affiliate (including at-large) whose contest they are entering. Those selections will put you into the correct affiliate contest. All directions needed to enter the contest are contained in the pages of the contest site. But if you have questions or need help entering, click the FAQ or Contact Us tabs on the contest navigation bar.

The entry deadline is Monday, February 9. For work that must be submitted in hard-copy format, the entry deadline is Monday, February 2.  The contest is open to both members and nonmembers of APC.

Dec. 3, 2014–The New KTVA 11–John Tracy

John Tracy became a partner at Bradley Reid + Associates in the summer of 2008 after 23 years as an anchor and News Director at KTUU-TV. John won numerous Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Awards as a reporter and producer at KTUU. A member of the Alaska Broadcasters Hall of Fame, John has covered stories for NBC Nightly News and CNN. At Bradley Reid, he’s produced campaigns for clients such as ConocoPhillips, Alaska Tourism and Providence. In 2012 he was commissioned to spearhead a team to re-build KTVA 11 for GCI, as Alaska’s first high-definition television station. John’s domestic focus group includes his wife Donna, their three children and two grandkids. Continue reading →

Popular Chinese Novels and Dramas: A Series

Everyone is invited to come and learn about the Chinese television series sensation “Empresses in the Palace / Legend of Concubine” by Zhen Huan, to read  the highly acclaimed book, Fortress Besieged by Qian Zhongshu, and Red Sorghum by Mo Yan– recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. Dr. Annie Zeng, members of the Confucius Institute, and UAA Faculty will participate. This event is sponsored with the UAA Confucius Institute.

Former Teachers as Writers

Former teachers Lynn Lovegreen, Deb Vanasse, Tam Agosti-Gisler and Julie Stafford discuss their books and the role teaching has in their writing. Julie Stafford is author of The Manual That Should Have Come With Your Child But Didn’t: A Teacher’s Guide to Healthy Parenting; Lynn Lovegreen is author of numerous young adult romance novels, including Quicksilver to Gold, and author Deb Vanasee who has published more than a dozen books in a variety of genres, including Lucy’s Dance and Cold Spell.Joining the authors will be Tam Agosti-Gisler, who will discuss Dona Marie Wolking Agosti’s book Wilma, which is about a wolverine.

Poet Carolyn Goodwin: Trapline

Caroline Goodwin was born and raised in Anchorage. She moved to California from Sitka in 1999 to attend Stanford University as a Wallace Stegner fellow in poetry. Her first collection of poetry called Trapline, was published by JackLeg Press in 2013. Currently, she serves as the first Poet Laureate of San Mateo County, CA, and also teaches in the MFA Writing program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her first poem was published in the Anchorage Daily News in 1971.

Oct. 2, 2014–Animal Stories: Encounters with Alaska’s Wildlife–Bill Sherwonit

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., nature writer Bill Sherwonit has called Alaska home since 1982. He has contributed essays and articles to a wide variety of newspapers, magazines, journals, and anthologies and is the author of more than a dozen books. His newest book is a collection of essays, Animal Stories: Encounters with Alaska’s Wildlife, published in September 2014 by Alaska Northwest Books. Visit his website.

Sept. 11, 2014–It’s Important to Paws–David Jensen

A third-generation Alaskan, David was born in Fairbanks before statehood. His family moved to Anchorage in 1963 just prior to the Great Alaska Earthquake.

David graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in Journalism and Public Communications in 1989. That same year, he created Alaska Pet-ography as a home-based business.

Realizing that the portrait studio had outgrown the house, he and his wife, Carol decided to lease a storefront in 1997. Soon after, they purchased their current studio located in South Anchorage and called it David Jensen Photography. The studio has grown to include two properties with private park settings designed for portraits of people and their animal companions.

In 2013, David published his first book called It’s Important to Paws, Lessons learned from Animal Companions.  A coffee table book, it focuses on animal companions in Alaska – a collection of writings and hundreds of portraits featuring dogs, cats, horses and many other beautiful companions. It’s Important to Paws received the 2014 Independent Publisher’s National Gold Medal award in the category of animals and pets. The book is available for purchase in retail locations around town. Copies of the book have been sold nationally and internationally. His second book, When Age has no Leash, Lessons Learned from Senior Dogs will be published in the next few months.

David is a member of the Anchorage Lion’s Club, Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska, Midnight Sun Street Rod Association and Anchorage Nordic Ski Club. He also plays the trumpet and directs the Front Row Seats Band. His images of rescued cats and dogs have appeared in the Anchorage Daily News for nearly 25 years through a collaborative program with Friends of Pets.

When not relaxing at home with the senior dogs that rule the house, you might spot David exploring one of Alaska’s beautiful trails or mountain sides via hiking boots, skis or snowshoes. Layla is nearly always at his side with dog booties on, a tennis ball in her mouth and a twinkle in her adventurous. golden retriever eyes.[metaslider id=1017]
